As part of its commitment to social responsibility and its dedication to supporting the state's efforts toward sustainable development and improving the quality of healthcare services provided to citizens, Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI) organized a comprehensive medical convoy to Tanash Village. The convoy was held under the patronage and in the presence of Professor Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Acting Director of the Institute and Chairman of the Board, through the Institute’s Community Service and Environmental Development Committee, in cooperation with the Al-Gam’iya Al-Shar’iya Association in Tanash Village. This initiative reflects the Institute’s ongoing commitment to extending healthcare services to the most underserved communities.

The convoy provided free medical and therapeutic services to more than 200 residents of the village, utilizing the Institute’s extensive medical and research capabilities. Services included clinical examinations across several specialties, preliminary laboratory investigations, ultrasound examinations, and the provision of free medications and treatment. Several cases requiring further medical attention were referred to the Institute’s Hospital, under the supervision and participation of Prof. Moshira Amer, Director of the Institute’s Hospital, for additional diagnostic procedures, treatment, and necessary surgical interventions.

The convoy witnessed the active participation of approximately 50 members from the Institute’s medical, research, administrative, and technical staff, representing a wide range of departments, including Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Nephrology, General Surgery, Urology, Radiology, Parasitology, Immunology, Hematology, Pharmacology, Clinical Chemistry, Electron Microscopy, Biochemistry, Meducinal Chemistry, Environmental Research, Medical Malacology, Public Health, and the Clinical Nutrition Unit. This multidisciplinary participation reflected the integration of expertise and collaborative efforts dedicated to serving the community.

In addition to medical services, the Institute placed significant emphasis on health education and awareness. The convoy’s program included educational lectures on the prevention of parasitic diseases, mechanisms for reducing the transmission of infections, and awareness of the health impacts of climate change and methods of protection against them. These activities received considerable engagement from the village residents, who expressed appreciation for the Institute’s efforts in reaching their community and providing integrated healthcare services free of charge.

Professor Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Director of the Theodor Bilharz Research Institute and Chairman of the Board, emphasized that medical convoys represent one of the key avenues through which the Institute fulfills its community mission. He noted that the Institute’s role extends beyond research, healthcare, and training to include an active contribution to improving public health, particularly in underserved areas, by utilizing its scientific and medical resources for the benefit of society.

He further stated that the Institute operates according to a clear vision aimed at strengthening the connection between scientific research and community needs, in alignment with national efforts to achieve health equity and ensure access to specialized healthcare services for all citizens. He stressed that delivering healthcare services directly to citizens in their communities embodies the Institute’s humanitarian and national mission and reflects its leading role in supporting the healthcare system and combating diseases.

In concluding his remarks, Prof. Abdel Aziz expressed his sincere appreciation to all members of the medical, research, administrative, and technical teams who contributed to the success of the convoy through their dedicated efforts. He also extended special thanks to Dr. Eman El-Wakeel, Assistant Professor of Parasitology and Chair of the Community Service and Environmental Development Committee, and Dr. Shaimaa Attia, Assistant Professor of Immunology and Deputy Head of the Technical Office, in recognition of their outstanding efforts in planning, organizing, and supervising the implementation of the convoy.

He affirmed that the achievements realized in Tanash Village represent a successful model for integrating scientific research with community engagement and demonstrate the importance of partnerships between research institutions and civil society organizations in advancing public health development. He further emphasized that the Theodor Bilharz Research Institute will continue implementing community initiatives aimed at delivering preventive and healthcare services to the most vulnerable populations across different governorates of Egypt.
