As part of its leading mission to support scientific research and advance continuous medical education,  Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI), under the leadership of Prof. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Acting Director of the Institute and Chairman of the Board, organized the TBRI Live Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Workshop. The event was held under the auspices of the Institute in collaboration with the Egyptian Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons (ESLS) and the Egyptian Society of Surgeons (ESS), making it one of the most prominent scientific events dedicated to advanced minimally invasive surgery.

The workshop brought together a distinguished group of leading professors of general and laparoscopic surgery from Egyptian universities, medical institutions, and research centers, including TBRI, alongside internationally recognized experts. The event attracted a large audience of consultants, specialists, fellowship physicians, and young surgeons, providing an integrated scientific platform for exchanging expertise and discussing the latest laparoscopic techniques in line with international best practices.

The scientific program featured four main sessions, including live surgical demonstrations of several advanced and complex procedures accompanied by interactive discussions between the operating surgeons and the audience. The workshop included a Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, performed by Prof. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, who also carried out a TAPP Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernioplasty. In addition, Assoc. Prof. Hesham El-Meligy, Head of the General Surgery Department at TBRI, performed a TEP Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernioplasty, while Prof. Ahmed Shoukry, Professor of General and Laparoscopic Surgery at Al Salam Oncology Center, performed a Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy.

 All procedures demonstrated a high level of scientific precision, showcasing the latest surgical techniques and intraoperative decision-making strategies. Participants were given the opportunity to interact directly with the operating surgeons, ask questions, and discuss technical challenges and various treatment options. This created significant educational and practical value, particularly for young surgeons and specialists in minimally invasive surgery. The workshop represented an advanced model of practice-based medical education, allowing attendees to follow every step of the operations live from the operating rooms while engaging in real-time discussions on surgical techniques and clinical decision-making.

The workshop also featured extensive panel discussions with distinguished professors of surgery from various Egyptian universities and research institutes. These discussions focused on recent advances in laparoscopic surgery, the management of complex cases, and evidence-based surgical best practices, promoting the transfer of expertise across generations of surgeons and reinforcing the culture of hands-on medical education.

In his remarks, Prof. Ahmed Abdel Aziz emphasized that organizing and hosting this workshop reflects the Institute's growing scientific standing as a national center of excellence for medical training and scientific research. He noted that the event represents a continuation of TBRI's commitment to hosting specialized scientific activities that bring together Egyptian and international expertise across diverse medical specialties.

He further stated that the workshop serves as an outstanding example of the integration of scientific research with clinical training, facilitating the transfer of advanced surgical techniques to young physicians and ultimately contributing to improved professional performance and higher-quality healthcare services for patients.
